On 1 October 2010, the Wet veiligheidsregio's (Dutch Security Regions Act) came into force. This Act brings together the fire brigade, medical assistance in the case of accidents and disasters, disaster response and crisis management, in a single organisation. This increases a municipality’s ability to act and results in greater unity in policy. The Security Regions Act replaces the Disasters and Major Accidents Act [Wet rampen en zware ongevallen].
